E-Bike or Scooter in Bali? An Honest Comparison

2 min read

In Bali, the scooter is the default answer to “how do I get around?” It’s cheap, everywhere, and everyone has one. But more residents are asking whether an electric bike could replace it for daily life. The honest answer: for some people yes, for others no. Here’s how to tell which group you’re in.

Where the e-bike wins

  • Short daily trips. Coffee, gym, market, the beach: for most trips under a few kilometres, you won’t arrive any later.

  • Running costs. No fuel, fewer parts to wear out.

  • Parking and stress. You can park almost anywhere, and you skip the helmet-hair and exhaust fumes.

  • Noise. You hear the neighbourhood instead of an engine.

  • Exercise. You can pedal as much or as little as you like.

Where the scooter still wins

  • Long distances and highways. Crossing the island at speed is not what an e-bike is for.

  • Carrying loads or passengers. A scooter handles a second person or heavy shopping more easily.

  • Rain and heat. Both are doable on an e-bike, but a scooter keeps you cooler at speed and is less effort in a downpour.

  • Charging. You need a plug at home or work, and a little planning.

Who should seriously consider an e-bike

Someone who lives and works in the same area, makes mostly short trips, and wants a quieter and healthier routine. If that’s you, an e-bike may replace your scooter entirely, or at least reduce how often you use it.

Mistakes to avoid when buying

  1. Buying on price alone, with no workshop or spare parts on the island.

  2. Skipping the test ride: comfort and frame size matter more than specs.

  3. Ignoring the battery: ask about range in real conditions and the cost of a replacement.

  4. Forgetting the climate: salt, humidity and rain damage cheap components fast.

A simple way to decide

Rent first. A few days on an e-bike will tell you more than any article. Note how many of your usual trips you could do without the scooter.

At Bold Electric Bikes, you can test a bike for free before deciding anything.
